CIRCLE HOOK PROGRAM Recent studies show that the use of circle-shaped hooks
instead of the traditionally used J-shaped hooks can
significantly reduce the bycatch of turtles in longline
fisheries. Whereas the use of a J hook increases gut hooking,
research show that the shape and point of the circle hook is
designed to prevent deep-hooking and to only hook in the
corner of an animal's mouth; thus making it easier to remove.
Circle hook also decreases deep hooking as they are less
likely to be swallowed by turtles. When ingested J-shaped
hooks can cause suffocation or internal bleeding.
As part of our sustainability efforts, Sea Delight is both
committed to supporting circle hook trial programs with our
suppliers, as well as providing adequate training and tools
for proper handling and release of turtles accidentally
hooked. The use of circle hooks is a tool which helps improve
responsible fishing practices while significantly reducing
incidental catch (bycatch) of marine turtles without impacting
fishing activity.
